U.S. vice-presidential nominees Sen. Joseph Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska square off tonight (9 PM Eastern Time) in their only scheduled debate of the campaign for the White House. What do the candidates need to do during the VP debate? What mistakes must they avoid? What should the astute observer look for?

It may be that for both Palin and Biden, the best thing to do during the vice presidential debate is as little as possible. If I were advising either one of the candidates, my advice would be to forget about trying to win. Losing this debate by being cautious will be far less costly to either one of the campaigns than committing a memorable, quotable, sound bite-able blunder. It’s much better for them to be conservative and take a few hits than to be drawn into a vulnerable position.

Some of the talking heads and consultants on TV may say that both candidates have to play to win the VP debate, that they have to prove they could be president if called upon, but I disagree. The news cycle just won’t let this debate live long enough to matter much (again, unless one or both of the candidates commits a huge blunder). On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on a controversial Wall Street bailout bill (now stuffed full of pork-barrel goodies by the Senate), and Friday also will bring a new batch of unemployment numbers. This all adds up to the fact that unless something spectacular comes out of tonight’s debate, the news media will be on to the next topic in just a few days, if not sooner.

In what they are calling a "hypocrisy bombshell", today SiriusXM radio host Michelangelo Signorile and DC-based LGBT activist Mike Rogers jointly revealed that Mark Buse, John McCain’s chief of staff, is a gay man.

Over the past month I’ve been contacted by three different individuals (two of them members of the Log Cabin Republicans) claiming that McCain’s Senate chief of state, Mark Buse, is gay. None of these individuals would be quoted by name, though each described Buse as being rather “open” to those around him and to his family – in a “glass closet” rather than deeply undercover or trying to appear heterosexual.

So… I read about a new beauty contest - Miss Sister 2008.  An Italian priest and school teacher is organizing this contest to give nuns “more visibility within the Catholic church and to fight the stereotype that they are old and dour.”  Beginning next month (September ‘08), Rev. Antonio Rungi will give nuns an opportunity to enhance their image and the world will have an opportunity to “vote for the nun they consider a model.”

I read it from donstuff.wordpress and I enjoyed the news. ;)

So the other day TMZ made a tongue-n-cheek post about how 16-year-old women’s gymnastics individual all-around Olympic silver medalist Shawn Johnson bared a striking resemblance to a that cute little mouse of long ago Topo Gigo.

They said:

Here’s tiny 16-year-old women’s gymnastics individual all-around Olympic silver medalist Shawn Johnson (left) — and “The Ed Sullivan Show’s” favorite soft foam Italian mouse Topo Gigio (right).

Only one of them is a puppet.
    We’re just sayin’…

I guess people lost their ever loving mind about it.

The Goliath Grouper, or the more scientific species Epinephelus quinquefasciatus, is a known species that’s been confirmed in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This fish can grow to lengths of over 6 feet and can weigh as much as a half a ton.

Genetic tests found this Goliath grouper isn’t the same species of Goliath Grouper that resides in the Atlantic ocean, scientifically known as the Epinephelus itajara. Although the Atlantic Goliath grouper and its cousin from the Pacific, the Epinephelus quinquefasciatus share a lot of common attributes, they have distinctly different genetic codes.

Matthew Craig, lead researcher at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology said,"For more than a century, ichthyologists have thought that Pacific and Atlantic goliath grouper were the same species and the argument was settled before the widespread use of genetic techniques."

Ms. Tubbs Jones was a colorful, funny, vibrant, engaging, and progressive voice in our national politics. She was one of Hillary Clinton’s most ardent supporters, but she advocated for her candidate in a completely respectful and positive way. She was the Chair of the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct (Ethics Committee). Our thoughts are with her friends and family. We’ve lost a wonderful representative and a great person.

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in Congress, has died after suffering a brain aneurysm, said sources familiar with the situation.

She was removed from life support at 12:19 p.m. at Huron Road Hospital, the sources said.

Tubbs Jones, 58, served as a Cuyahoga County judge and prosecutor before succeeding U.S. Rep. Louis Stokes. She has served five terms in Congress and is expected to easily win her sixth in November.
